Suicide Squad 2 May Show Harley Quinn in Her Court Jester Costume

Warner Bros.’ DC Comics universe kicks off in just a few short weeks with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Then studio shifts focus to a group of iconic super villains in this summer’s Suicide Squad, hitting theaters August 5. One character most fans are looking forward to is Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, who will be debuting on the big screen for the first time, after being first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series in the 1990s. We’ve seen from the trailers that Harley won’t be wearing her iconic court jester costume, but during an interview with Hello Giggles, Margot Robbie revealed that it was almost included in the movie, and may be featured in Suicide Squad 2.

“We tried on every variation of the costume. I cannot emphasize enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried. We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her. I really love where we ended up. And who knows, maybe in the sequels we’ll go with the court jester one. I think there’s a world of possibilities.”

We reported last week that Warner Bros. is reportedly so happy with Suicide Squad that they’re already working on the sequel, with plans for director David Ayer to return and start production sometime in 2017. The director, who also wrote Suicide Squad, won’t be available to write the script, since he signed on to direct the new fantasy crime thriller Bright starring Will Smith for Warner Bros. The studio wants to start shooting Bright this year, in hopes of getting both David Ayer and Will Smith back to shoot Suicide Squad 2 sometime next year.

The all-star ensemble cast for Suicide Squad includes Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Karen Fukuhara (Katana) Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), and Jay Hernandez (El Diablo). While no other cast members are confirmed yet, Margot Robbie revealed in this interview that she would “absolutely” sign on for a follow-up, while revealing the unusual circumstances in which she was cast as Harley Quinn. Here’s what the actress had to say below.

“I was actually about to sign up for another project, and Warner Bros. heard that I was about to sign on to something else. Before I signed on, they quickly jumped in and said, ‘Before you do that, just consider this role, because you don’t want to miss this! You’d be right for it!’ And I was like ‘Oh, ok, let me read the script.’ And they were like, ‘There is no script!’ And I was like, ‘Oookay who else is in it?’ And they were like, ‘No one yet!’ And I was like, ‘okay, what is this film?’ The only information [they gave me] was, ‘Harley Quinn, a comic book character,’ and I never read the comics. Then [they told me] David Ayer [is] directing. That’s all I needed to hear. I heard David, and I was like, ‘Oh I’m in.’ I was obsessed with End of Watch, and I thought that was such a brilliant movie, and I saw it like four times. I think he’s so talented, and to do a comic book movie with a director like David, who is going to make it so dark and cool and different, just to me, that sounded like exactly what I thought they should be doing with comic book movies. I was on board. And you know, fortunately the end product [became] something even better than I could have ever imagined.”

Warner Bros. hasn’t issued a release date for Suicide Squad 2 yet, but if production does in fact start next year, it’s possible they could release it in 2018. As of now, the studio will release The Flash on March 23, 2018 and Aquaman on July 27, 2018, so if this sequel does move forward, it’s possible that they could release it at some point in the back half of 2018. Would you like to see Harley Quinn’s court jester costume in Suicide Squad 2?
